Day 75

The next couple of days saw Stephen complete his training with the survivors in the prison that now made up the security forces. They completed courses in firearms, hand-to-hand combat, and small unit tactics. Physical fitness was stressed, and a few candidates got a crash course from Eddie in driving an 18-wheeler, Stephen included.

“They’re great for hauling a lot of shit,” he explained. “Plus, I always wanted to drive one.”

Passing scores were required in marksmanship with Logan and Kleaner providing the test. I conducted the physical fitness training, along with hand-to-hand combat drills, for killing zombies up close and personal without getting bitten. It was a little comical to have me teaching hand-to-hand combat while leaning heavily on my walking staff. I also took the time to stress what types of clothing we preferred on raids. No loose clothing was allowed. Loose clothing let zombies easily grab hold of their victims and it was hard to make it let go. We recommended leather, canvas or anything dense that could slow down a zombie bite. Stephen conducted endless drills on movement and tactics, with the progress being evident almost immediately. He also picked out the natural leaders amongst the group, and upon completion sorted the men into a company level unit with four separate platoons. They were not to be the only line of defense; this is where our safe zone differed from other refugee camps. We expected everyone to be armed, so everyone could be called on in short notice if necessary.

The first three platoons, Alpha, Bravo and Charlie, were each complemented with three nine-man squads, for a total of twenty-seven. They were responsible for the always dangerous supply raids and would work on a rotating basis. The day after a raid, you were off and free to work on side projects or take care of personal matters. The third day you trained, pulled guard for the burn/burial crew, and kept on standby in the event of an emergency. Stephen made sure that each platoon was outfitted with as similar weapons as possible, rifles and pistols. Every rifle was to be magazine fed, with enough magazines for a full combat load. Stephen preferred seven to ten per man. Every pistol was to be issued with five magazines, mag pouches and holsters. The platoons were also equipped with medical and communication personnel.

Dan, Mattie, Stephen, Amber and I were in Alpha platoon, as we were in fact the self-described “A” team. The platoon was completely equipped with AR-15 rifles of various manufacturers. Bravo platoon was equipped with the AK-74’s. They also had the benefit of the camouflage uniforms that were located along with the rifles. Charlie platoon was armed with a variety of AK-47 rifles and a few SKS carbines. Side arms were mandatory, but left to personal preference. The forth group, Delta platoon would not participate in the raids and was permanently assigned perimeter duty and internal security. It was the largest by far, led by Logan, Kleaner and Casper.
